career,s advice for a 16 year old
My young lad is currently doing his Gcse,s and will I think do okay.
Not thrilled about A levels as doesn't seem to keen to stay another two years doing subjects such as math,s etc.
So looking for recommendations if he heads down the college route, what are good options.
Its been suggested graphic design etc but I know nothing about it.
Expect the usual abuse but any advice would be helpful.

Look on a careers website, or a college website.

Football Forum | Ticket Forum | Off-Topic FORUM| All

This is a West Ham website.

Re: career,s advice for a 16 year old
A young lad recently wrote to me using of all things a PEN. Explained he wanted to learn about business and wanted a job in sales. Fair play to the lad for asking and I'm meeting him this week. Sometimes it just takes balls and an alternative approach. (writing a letter is now perceived as alternative). If I like him I'll give the lad a chance.

Can you still get a City & Guilds?

Sparks, plumbers and car mechanics always have work; desperate punters alot of the time.

Not big money, but steady trade.

If he's after the money, drug smuggler. Tell him to WHOmail me if he's interested in seeing the world and enhancing lives.

Get a trade. If I could go back and tell my 16 year old self anything it'd be this.

As far as I know graphic design it's more about a portfolio and experience than actual academic qualifications. Pretty much everyone I know who does that sort of thing says the same.

A-levels are the biggest waste of time ever, as you can go to university without them when you're older.

Depends what he wants to go into

As a young lad in the city its all about who you know rather than what you know

I passed my City and Guilds in printing, at the time it was a steady job with half decent money but the trade has taken an awful hit lately with digital printing and foreign (Chinese) companies benefiting

I would warn him off being a plumber or spark because it does not afford as much time to post on here in the working day as office based careers do.

Re: career,s advice for a 16 year old
Just wanna clarify on my post that I'm not saying "get a trade" just for the sake of it, just that there are much better ways to get into doing what he wants (graphic design) than spending 2 more years sat in classrooms for 3-4 pointless pieces of paper, like a lot of people do as a stepping stone to university.

If he takes an apprenticeship (not necessarily a building trade) he can go to uni later if he chooses, but more importantly earn half decent money while he's young.

Can probably get apprenticeships in graphic design or something related these days as well.

Who is the downy moderator who copied that onto my post?

It's a West Ham site. You've shown three sections: Football forum, Ticket forum and off-topic forum.

Off-topic forum must therefore mean not specifically about the football or tickets, but it is still a West Ham forum and should therefore be to do with West Ham.

You were a poor choice for moderator.

The " 2 more years sat in classrooms " is relating to a-levels btw.

Re: career,s advice for a 16 year old
Best advice is look to find a career in something you are passionate about or do as a hobby, and look for a way to earn a living from it.

He'll spend the majority of his life getting up early to go do whatever it is and that decision now will impact in his quality of life for the next 40 or 50 years.

As someone who works in IT, earns what would generally be considered very good money, and dreads work most days, this is the best advice I can offer. Once you start down the career road, changing oath is pretty tough.

It's nearly JUNE!!

Shouldn't you/he have been thinking about this latter part of last year when Colleges start taking applications?

College interviews will have taken place already by now.

I'd suggest you on the government website that shows all apprenticeships in your area.

Re: career,s advice for a 16 year old
I think the further education route is overrated these days - changes in tuition fee structures etc mean uni is extortionate but unis are now so money grabbing that they take anyone and iffer shit courses that lead nowhere. There are some benefits to a degree in anything, as it does look good to employers and shows a level of commitment and academic ability, but it's not the be all and end all.

So if they don't want to go to uni, a levels aren't necessarily that beneficial. You can earn more money more quickly doing an apprenticeship and going into employment and you won't have tens of thousands of pounds of debt you'll be paying off for decades. I'll be 40 by the time I pay off my student loan and only then can I start a pension as I can't afford to do both, so my pension will be shit. You don't think about that when you're 16/18 and looking forward to 3 years of drinking!

If he has a passion, encourage and focus on that, but also beware that certain industries can be tough to get good work in. Also, what you like at 16 may not be what you like at 26 so it's not a choice for life as such, but it will set you off on a path as with fewer qualifications, work experience will solely dictate what career you are able to move to going down the line unless you retrain.

Local authorities often offer good apprenticeships in various areas and could be a good foot in the door. Tradespersons will always be needed - if be far better off now if I'd trained as a plumber or electrician when I was 16!

Basic and obvious, but if he doesn't know what he wants to do, colleges you gov etc; are not really going to solve the problem.
My youngest is about to leave and hopefully is going to get an engineering apprenticeship, so easy to sort when they have a passion.

Re: career,s advice for a 16 year old
Something it's also worth noting is that nothing is set in stone, it's not like whatever he does now will be his career for the rest of his life, although when I was at school it was certainly drilled into us that life was that way ("if you don't go to college and do A-levels and get a degree then you'll end up as a roadsweeper" sort of thinking)

Plenty of people get a trade or a job straight from school and then go back to college or uni at a later date, it's easier now than ever.
